AEO vs SEO: What’s the Difference and Why It Matters

Darrell Mbow — May 26, 2026

In short: SEO optimizes for a ranking of links; AEO optimizes for a single AI-generated answer. You need both, but the center of gravity is shifting.

The question comes up in every leadership meeting: should we drop SEO for AEO? The answer is no — but understanding the difference is vital to allocate investment.

Two different logics

SEO answers a ranking logic: ten ordered links, the user chooses. AEO answers a selection logic: the AI chooses for you and presents only three to five brands. The first optimizes a page’s position; the second optimizes the probability of being cited.

What they share

Both disciplines rest on common foundations: quality content, sound technical architecture, structured data, and authority. Good SEO remains a useful base: AI engines still rely heavily on the web index for their retrieval phase.

What separates them

  • The target: a ranking algorithm for SEO; a language model for AEO.
  • The format: pages for SEO; extractable answers and entities for AEO.
  • The measurement: positions and clicks for SEO; citation rate, AI share of voice and sentiment for AEO.

Why the center of gravity is shifting

Google now represents only a share of real “search.” An entire generation starts its research on TikTok, Reddit or directly inside an AI. “Zero-click” traffic is rising: users get their answer without ever visiting a site. In this world, ranking well is not enough if you are not in the answer.

The winning approach

The right strategy does not pit SEO against AEO: it integrates them. You keep the SEO base while actively building the presence, consensus and structure that trigger citation by AIs. This is exactly the articulation we operate at The Hills Agency.

Takeaway: SEO makes you findable; AEO makes you recommended. In 2026, recommendation is worth more than position.
