AEO Checklist: 12 Actions to Get Cited by AIs
Darrell Mbow — March 12, 2026
In short: here are twelve concrete actions, grouped by theme, to methodically improve your presence in AI-generated answers.
AEO can feel abstract. Here is an operational checklist to take action this week.
Technical foundations
- Implement Schema.org structured data (Organization, FAQPage, Article, Product).
- Explicitly allow AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot) in robots.txt.
- Publish a clear llms.txt file at the root of the domain.
- Ensure fast, clean, server-rendered pages for reliable extraction.
Extractable content
- Phrase headings as real questions your customers ask.
- Put a direct, concise answer at the top of each section.
- Use lists, tables and clear definitions rather than long blocks of prose.
- Maintain a rich, factual, regularly updated FAQ.
Authority and consensus
- Build authentic PR in reference publications.
- Encourage expert contributions and presence in relevant communities.
- Consolidate a consistent brand entity (name, description, profiles, knowledge bases).
- Regularly measure your AI share of voice to steer efforts.
From checklist to strategy
These twelve actions are an excellent starting point, but their real power comes from orchestration. In isolation, they produce marginal gains; combined and tracked over time, they create a durable advantage. This is the logic of The Hills Agency’s A.N.S.W.E.R. Protocol™.
Takeaway: start with technical and extractability fixes (fast to correct), then invest in authority and consensus (slower, but decisive).
